Sierre Zinal is the latest sports casualty of the Covid 19 pandemic directives related to Covid 19.
We acknowledge the latest directives related to Covid19 set forth by the Swiss Federal Council:
«All publicly accessible venues must have a set of precautionary measures in place (...) Hand hygiene and keeping an appropriate distance remain the most important protective measures (...) Events and gatherings for up to 1000 people will once again be permitted. However, contact tracing must be possible at all times. Event organisers must ensure that the maximum number of people who may need to be contacted does not exceed 300 (...) Large-scale events of more than 1000 people will be permitted starting at the beginning of September, as long as the epidemiological situation does not worsen. Spectators will also have to be placed in separate blocks».
Social distancing requirements entail a substantial increase in costs, volunteer manpower and worktime, in addition to the cancellation of all events surrounding the race. With limited options at Zinal and along the course, we feel it is impossible to hold Sierre-Zinal in its traditional form, while also ensuring the safety of runners, volunteers and spectators and meeting our quality standards.
The size of this event drove the decision to cancel it in its existing format, but a Free-Form Version of Sierre-Zinal 2020 will be held in its place.
For 33 days, between Monday 17 August and Friday 18 September runners will be offered the option to race independently with the Sierre-Zinal staff greeting them at the race start and finish. Entering this Free-Form Race includes:
- An official, race time
- An intermediate time at Chandolin.
- One official Aid Station and Checkpoint at Chandolin
- A 47th edition official diploma if the runner completes the race.
- A bespoke 47th edition medal if the runner completes the race.
- The opportunity to be part of the Sierre-Zinal legend.
All registrants who secured a Sierre-Zinal 2020 entry, either in the Runner or Tourist category, or a Chandolin-Zinal 2020 entry (Juniors) are eligible to sign up for the Free-Form Version of the race over one month. They will receive an e-mail asking to confirm their wish to take part in the Free-Form Race, even though they have been refunded. Regular Sierre-Zinal 2020 registrations are now closed.
Registrants who purchased a Cancellation Refund Policy will be reimbursed. Those concerned will receive a refund notice via e-mail. However, Sierre-Zinal is not just an event… it is an accomplishment, the climax of months of efforts, the glorification of a lifestyle, a moment of cultural history, nothing less! We are deeply grateful for the loyalty you have shown us when you signed up for the Race of the Five 4000 m Peaks despite the uncertainty surrounding the global health situation. You’ve trained in the hope and anticipation of a race you already feel to be a part of - which is why we won’t let you down.

HOW WAS THIS PROJECT MADE POSSIBLE?
This unprecedented Sierre-Zinal Free-Form edition has been made possible thanks to the support and commitment of our sponsors: Couronnes UBS and EMILE CHOURIET, WEISSHORN Salomon, DENT BLANCHE Groupe Mutuel, CERVIN Fonds du Sport de la Loterie Romande, Anniviers and Sierre municipalities ZINALROTHORN Datasport (timing) Grand+Partenaires (Graphic Design), BOOsport (online shop), Caméléon (clothing line), Atelier Réalisation (videos), OBERGABELHORN Epiney Construction, as well as the loyalty of our local supporters.
Offering runners a month’s window to run the Sierre-Zinal course could not have happened had there not been the Sierre-Zinal dedicated Board of Directors, committee members and volunteers who all have all been long-standing mountain lovers and trail running fans.
Finally, this is happening thanks to all of you, members of the Sierre-Zinal family who did not want to miss out on this 47-year-old iconic adventure.
WE WISH YOU AN UNFORGETTABLE 2020 SIERRE ZINAL FREE-FORM RACE
NO DOUBT IT WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY AS A TRULY SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
